"However, I now realize there were likely a sea of women surrounding me in peri-menopause, probably many who’d made in through to the other side. But we didn’t talk about it, we don’t discuss it- hence the terrifying enigma."
I resonate so strongly with this line. I started making a list today of all the things I didn't know were linked to peri that I have experienced out of the blue in the last year. Anxiety, sleep issues, brain fog, the carpal tunnel in my right wrist that I previously only experienced in pregnancy (when again my hormones were wonky). And the only way I've been able to connect the dots on any of them has been my own research. It's nuts how little we know about this time in our lives.
It's so true! I also had terrible carpal tunnel during both my pregnancies and then again in peri. I hope that researching and discussing all these things will be the norm by the time our daughters go through the change.
This post really resonates. I’m 59 and officially post menopausal this September. I’m really struggling with accepting my age and my aging, menopausal (dry!) body. Like you, I’ve been active and felt “young,” as you say, “what ever that means.” I’m also previously 5’2 and shrinking. Yikes. And I have been stretching and practicing yoga for 20 years. I just was put on vaginal estrogen & it’s affecting my young feeling big time. Damn, if my vagina is old, I’m definitely old! Lol Thank you for this honest and well written share around aging.
I knew I was about a centimetre taller after 12 months of stretching and strengthening because I could reach things in the high cupboard that I couldn’t reach before. Shrinking happens to old people but it doesn’t mean it’s a fact of life. I’m in my 70s and working on maintaining muscle mass and flexibility and strength. I recently decided that going through the menopause years was similar to adolescence. Hormonal upheaval wreaks havoc and research on women’s health is still limited. It’s up to women to share their experiences. When I look back I believe menopause has affected me well into my sixties. I also wish I had known about the aging spike in the early sixties. It happens to both men and women but I think I had more hormonal changes around that time too. It’s great to read about your experiences so far. Speaking about menopause doesn’t seem as taboo as it used to be.
Thank you for leaving a comment! Yes to everything you’ve said. Although our specific experiences are unique to us, we are not alone. Happy to connect with you 😀
